Emily Sullivan Sustainability Strategist Director

“Growing up with parents who dedicated their careers to serving others, I’ve always felt a strong draw to my community and a personal responsibility to help improve it. I get my energy from connecting and collaborating with others.”

My name is Emily Sullivan; I’m the Sustainability Strategist Director supporting Barkley’s B Corp certification and “Add Good” impact strategy.

Growing up with parents who dedicated their careers to serving others, I’ve always felt a strong draw to my community and a personal responsibility to help improve it. I get my energy from connecting and collaborating with others.

Thanks to my awesome daughters and partner, I’m continuously practicing being present, drinking more water (less lattes), and making room for fun and art projects. From carving bars of soap at age 5 to oil painting at 25 or gardening at age 35, I love to tap into creative expression and learning through my hands!

Q+A with Emily Sullivan

PeopleOfBarkley Art DEIB

What is one thing you can’t live without?

My family – particularly doing artwork with my daughters, calling my mom (almost every day) after work, and couch chats with my partner.

What is one thing about you that most people at work don’t know?

I freaking love to garden. If there is a small patch of dirt in my yard, there is a plan for planting something in it. When my hands are “on,” my brain is “off,…so although I love food, it's also a form of mediation, intentionality, and gratitude.

What's an unpopular opinion you feel strongly about?

Ziplock bags aren’t actually disposable; they CAN be reused…it depends on what was originally stored in them.

Life without social media or life without music?

Social media, hands down.

Do you believe in aliens?

Totally have believed in aliens since 1997 (Men in Black, LOL)

Why Barkley?

My formal education was in Graphic Design and Marketing – I came into sustainability through different volunteer opportunities and personal passion projects … so finding a “work home” where I can marry creative thinking with pragmatic analysis and problem-solving felt right. I have the privilege of having the only job at Barkley like mine! It's exciting and humbling to co-create a brand’s larger purpose and impact on people and the planet through our world together and through our B Corporation status.

Why do you serve on the DEI+B Advisory Council?

We have a philosophy of winning inside to win outside. I choose to be on the council, specifically the Culture pillar, because we can have many amazing strategies. Still, our culture will eat them for lunch if we don’t have a culture that embraces sustainability, diversity, and inclusion.
