POB - Reshma Karnik Small

Reshma Karnik Chief Media Officer

I was born and raised in Mumbai and while growing up would often sit by the ocean and wonder what was on the other side of the world, across the seven seas. I often wondered what it would be like to experience the culture, the life, the food and explore the land where all my favorite movies were made.

“Making a career in something quantitative made sense, and that’s what I did for many years in NY, but then an opportunity came up to explore the world of media & advertising and I was able to tap into my passion for blending the qualitative and quantitative sides.”

After my undergrad in Economics, I completed my MBA in Marketing and settled into the life of being a banker, but kept wanting to learn beyond what I knew. So I applied to the MS in Economics program here in the States and that started my journey. From then to now, it has been an incredible ride. From a starry-eyed student to pursuing the career of my dreams to being a mother, this has been a journey I wouldn’t trade for the world!

Speaking of pursuing the career of my dreams; after grad school, I moved to New York City, my home away from home. Making a career in something quantitative made sense, and that’s what I did for many years in NY, but then an opportunity came up to explore the world of media & advertising and I was able to tap into my passion for blending the qualitative and quantitative sides. Since then it's been a superb fun filled fulfilling career path. Seventeen years of business development, digital media, ad tech, and analytics expertise, which I now bring to Barkley.

Prior to joining Barkley, I was the Vice President, Data & Technology Solutions at MediaLink, a strategic advisory & consultancy firm at the center of media & marketing, where I worked with a team of strategists and architects to assess, recommend, and implement plans for partnerships on both the buy and sell-side helping brands, agencies, private equity firms, and ad tech companies to accelerate business growth, revenue, investment, market share & transformation

Before that, I was the Vice President, of Global Client Results at Dentsu. During my eight-year tenure there, I focused on programmatic media. I expanded the company’s Global Data Management Platform across 30+ countries enabling & ensuring a consistent media and data strategy for brands across markets and regions.

Outside of work, I enjoy tennis, reading, numismatics, and traveling with my husband and twin boys in my spare time. My mantra - Dream big! Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.

Q+A with Reshma Karnik

POB Circles - Purple

What is one thing you can’t live without?

My kids. Being a mother is truly special. If I were to name something else, it would have to be books. I absolutely cannot go without having a good read. You will not find me without a book during travel. A gripping historical mystery and I am all set!

What is one thing about you that most people at work don’t know?

I have a tremendous interest in numismatics and archaeology. It started from the time my grandfather gave me my first coin and I have been captivated ever since. I am a big fan of documentaries on ancient history & excavations, so the connection with history continues. Historical books, documentaries, artifacts, etc … if I had taken up an alternate career it would have been archaeology or astrophysics.

What's an unpopular opinion you feel strongly about?

Running is a fun hobby … NOT! I once participated in a 100-meter sprint in school and got the bronze medal. Guess what, only three people were running. Actually let me correct that: four people were running, and 1 stumbled and fell so I got third place. Moral of the story: I cannot run!

Life without social media or life without music?

Life without social media any day. Music is the best thing on planet earth. It transcends boundaries and is the universal language. I started classical singing when I was 12 and have since enjoyed music from across the world. My absolute favorites are Celtic folk where the sound of the harp is divine and Indian classical music, with specific instruments like the Tabla & Sitar.

Do you believe in aliens?

Oh yeah! In this universe, we are only a small, tiny, minute, microscopic spec! One out of the many billion galaxies. There is so much more to explore in astrophysics, so yes perhaps aliens do exist.
