PreZero uses nature’s best recycler — the black soldier fly — to transform hard-to-handle food waste into sustainable animal feed and fertilizer. Its purpose? To reduce its customers’ environmental footprint — and protect our planet for future generations.

PreZero’s innovative solution to food waste requires change and resources from customers, who often see PreZero’s grocery origins as a competitor. Additionally, customer buyers aren’t always connected to organizational sustainability goals or feel compelled to help advance them - it’s about reliability, cost, and efficiency.

Modern Consumer Insight

Food waste concerns growers, manufacturers, grocers, and consumers alike. The U.S. EPA and USDA are united in a food loss and waste reduction goal to reduce waste by 50% by 2030 — and are passing these reductions along to the food industry.


Barkley created compelling core messaging and a communication plan to drive awareness and sales of its first-of-its-kind-at-scale services and products among target customers, create interest among specific government entities, and educate and create alignment within the organization, and further its sustainability vision.

Then, to help PreZero share its capabilities with potential customers, we also created a design system that centers the black soldier fly as a superhero for the future and reframes waste as a valuable part of the food system. We imagined a physical experience for PreZero’s new visitor center to accompany a sale-able story to attract attention from a wide range of stakeholders.
